This room-sized mixed-reality experience by Ukrainian artist Victoria Lopukhina and Czech artist Ondřej Moravec (whose thematically related VR piece Fresh Memories: The Look was part of IDFA 2023) makes tangible the feeling of everything—your home, your foundations, your grip on life—suddenly becoming fragile. The idea is to explore the mixed reality of Fragile Home in your own living room, so at IDFA we’ve set up a room containing a table, sofa, windows and so on. Walking around in this physical space, you’ll see virtual Ukrainian elements appear, such as borscht on the table, family photos on the wall, and a couch with multicolored cushions and a cat that wants to be petted. You go through several stages in this peaceful domestic environment, accompanied by the sound of melancholy polyphonic Ukrainian folk songs. The first thing to disrupt the calm is politics, in the form of newspapers, pamphlets and new photos of the family at the Euromaidan demonstrations in 2013. Then comes the devastating war and the decision not to flee but to work on recovery. This emotional mixed-reality work becomes a microcosm of the national home: Ukraine.

In een mixed reality-ervaring op kamergrootte roepen de Tsjechische maker Ondřej Moravec (van wie IDFA in 2023 de thematisch verwante VR Fresh Memories: The Look vertoonde) en de Oekraïense maker Victoria Lopukhina het gevoel op dat jouw thuis, je basis, je houvast, opeens fragiel wordt. Het idee is om de MR Fragile Home in je eigen woonkamer te doen; op IDFA is hiervoor een ruimte ingericht met onderdelen als een tafel, bank, raam et cetera. In die fysieke werkelijkheid zie je, door rond te lopen, virtuele Oekraïense elementen verschijnen – van de borsjtsj op tafel, via de veelkleurige kussens en een kat (die geaaid wil worden) op de bank, tot de familiefoto’s aan de muur. Vervolgens ga je door vier stadia, begeleid door weemoedige, meerstemmig gezongen Oekraïense volksliederen. In de huiselijke kalmte dringt eerst de politiek door (via de krant, pamfletten en nieuwe foto’s van het gezin bij de Euromaidan-demonstraties van 2013), vervolgens de vernietigende oorlog, waarna een begin wordt gemaakt met herstel – een keuze, dus, om niet te vluchten. Waarmee dit emotionerende werk tevens een spiegel vormt voor het nationale thuis, Oekraïne.

THE NEXT PERFORMANCE ART GENERATION / (Pas si) Fragile! the Next Performance Art Generation is a biennial springboard for emerging artists working in performance art: Its formula modifies with each new iteration. 2024’s edition will unfold at Studio Thor, which has been running the project ever since 2020, at Les Halles de Schaerbeek and at La Balsamine. As with previous iterations, (Pas si) Fragile! will feature a host of young artists who have recently graduated from Wallonia-Brussels’ visual arts schools. These institutions devote part of their curriculum to performance art, responding to the new dynamic generated by these practices within the professional artistic field. This year its scope will differ somewhat, however, for this endeavour will be expanded to include the presentation of work by some fifteen young artists from right across Europe: Finland, Greece, Ireland, Poland and Slovenia. In total, some thirty emerging artists will animate this intensive three-day programme, at the intersection of local practice here in Belgium and two projects featuring an international dimension, namely Performing Identity and Time For Live Art.
