Where 40 notable prospects traded at the deadline begin with their new organizations (2024)

The 2024 MLB trade deadline wasn’t necessarily notable for the names of the players involved in the deals, but it will be remembered for the sheer volume of transactions. Sixty trades were made in the six days leading up to the deadline, with more than 30 coming on the final day. Nearly 100 players were traded, many of them minor leaguers.

Advertisem*nt

For some of those minor-league players, the moment they were mentioned as the trade return on the scroll on MLB Network could be the last time they’re national news. For others, it will mark the start of long MLB careers with new organizations.

But first, they have to make their debuts with their new teams. So where did all these prospects go? Below is a look at the initial assignments for 40 notable prospects traded at the deadline.

(Players are organized by their acquiring organizations, which are ordered by the most significant prospect hauls. Stats are through Wednesday, July 31.)

Miami Marlins

Connor Norby, IF

Old organization: Baltimore Orioles
Assignment: Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp

It was likely a deflating moment for Norby, who was on the active roster for a World Series contender, to be traded and then demoted to Triple A by his new organization. The 24-year-old infielder has a .908 OPS in Triple A but hit only .188 with a .594 OPS in 32 at-bats for the Orioles before the trade.

Kyle Stowers, OF

Old organization: Baltimore Orioles
Assignment: Miami Marlins

Stowers’ fate was the reverse of Norby’s after the trade to the Marlins, as he went from the Orioles’ Triple-A roster to the majors with Miami. The 26-year-old outfielder is technically not prospect eligible any more but he has only 161 career MLB at-bats. He had an .877 OPS in Triple A this season.

Robby Snelling, LHP

Old organization: San Diego Padres
Assignment: Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos

Snelling, 20, had struggled with Double-A San Antonio, but he’s young for the level. He’ll remain at Double A with his new organization while looking to get back to the form that allowed him to post a 1.82 ERA in his pro debut season in 2023.

Adam Mazur, RHP

Old organization: San Diego Padres
Assignment: Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp

Advertisem*nt

Mazur has made eight MLB starts this season but the Padres had optioned him to the minor leagues on July 27. When he was traded three days later, he remained in the minors, joining the Marlins’ Triple-A club. He dominated in six Double-A starts earlier this season but had a 7.83 ERA in five starts in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He’ll likely be an option for the Marlins’ rotation in the coming weeks.

Agustin Ramírez, C/1B

Old organization: New York Yankees
Assignment: Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp

Ramírez hit 16 homers in 58 Double-A games to start the season but had cooled off following a promotion to Triple A. The 22-year-old catcher/first baseman has already eclipsed the 20-homer plateau for the season and is a strong candidate to make his MLB debut this year.

Deyvison De Los Santos, IF

Old organization: Arizona Diamondbacks
Assignment: Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp

De Los Santos hit 28 homers in 88 games for the Diamondbacks’ Double-A and Triple-A teams before the deal. He wasted no time showing off his power with his new organization, homering twice in his first three games to reach 30 for the year. He’s also likely to get a look from the Marlins later this season.

Graham Pauley, IF/OF

Old organization: San Diego Padres
Assignment: Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos

Pauley made his MLB debut with San Diego in the Seoul Series in Korea, but he’s spent most of the season in Triple A, where he was hitting .228/.342/.390 before the deal. He’s been assigned to Double-A Pensacola, returning to the level where he hit .321 last season for San Antonio.

Jared Serna, IF

Old organization: New York Yankees
Assignment: Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos

After posting a .785 OPS with 13 homers and 11 steals in 88 High-A games, Serna received a promotion along with his trade to a new organization, joining Double-A Pensacola, where he promptly collected six hits in his first nine at-bats.

Tampa Bay Rays

Dylan Lesko, RHP

Old organization: San Diego Padres
Assignment: High-A Bowling Green Hot Rods

Lesko, a 2022 first-round pick, had struggled with Fort Wayne before the trade, posting a 6.46 ERA in 69 2/3 innings with 52 walks.

Aidan Smith, OF

Old organization: Seattle Mariners
Assignment: Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (injured list)

Smith, 20, had an impressive .284/.402/.470 line with 28 stolen bases for Modesto before the trade. He’s out with a broken hand so may not make his debut with the Rays until next season.

— Mariners Minors (@MiLBMariners) May 24, 2024

Brody Hopkins, RHP

Old organization: Seattle Mariners
Assignment: High-A Bowling Green Hot Rods

Hopkins, 22, was off to a fast start in Low A before the trade, posting a 2.90 ERA with 95 strikeouts in 83 2/3 innings. He’ll get the challenge of a higher level when he debuts with his new organization.

Jackson Baumeister, RHP

Old organization: Baltimore Orioles
Assignment: High-A Bowling Green Hot Rods

Baumeister, the No. 63 pick in last year’s draft, had a 3.06 ERA in 70 2/3 innings at High-A Aberdeen before the trade. The 22-year-old remains at that level for now.

Mac Horvath, OF

Old organization: Baltimore Orioles
Assignment: High-A Bowling Green Hot Rods

The former UNC star stole 26 bases in 27 chances for Aberdeen before the trade but had a disappointing .745 OPS. He collected two hits in his Bowling Green debut.

Advertisem*nt

Matthew Etzel, OF

Old organization: Baltimore Orioles
Assignment: Double-A Montgomery Biscuits

Etzel, a 2023 10th-round pick, had already spent half of his season in Double A before the trade, and he remains at that level with the Rays. He’s already stolen 41 bases this season.

Homer Bush Jr., OF

Old organization: San Diego Padres
Assignment: High-A Bowling Green Hot Rods

The son of the former big leaguer of the same name, Bush hit .272 with a .362 OBP and 43 steals for High-A Fort Wayne before the deal.

Toronto Blue Jays

Joey Loperfido, OF

Old organization: Houston Astros
Assignment: Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays acquired 14 players at the deadline, 13 with rookie eligibility remaining. Of those 13, only Loperfido begins his Toronto career in the big leagues, where he will get regular playing time in an outfield that lost Kevin Kiermaier on deadline day.

Jonatan Clase, OF

Old organization: Seattle Mariners
Assignment: Triple-A Buffalo Bisons

The speedy Clase was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo but The Athletic’s Kaitlyn McGrath reports he’s likely to join the major-league roster at some point in the near future. He made his major-league debut for the Mariners earlier this season and has 30 stolen bases between Triple A and the big leagues this year.

Jake Bloss, RHP

Old organization: Houston Astros
Assignment: Triple-A Buffalo Bisons

Bloss, 23, jumped all the way from High A to the big leagues for the Astros this season, which is his first full pro campaign. The Blue Jays optioned him to Triple A after the deal to give him a breather after such a quick rise and to give them a chance to assess him in a less competitive environment, according to McGrath. He’s likely to join the Blue Jays’ rotation at some point this season.

Charles McAdoo, UT

Old organization: Pittsburgh Pirates
Assignment: Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats

Advertisem*nt

Like Bloss, McAdoo has excelled in his first full pro season. In 87 games between High A and Double A, he’s hit .315/.394/.538 with 14 homers and 17 stolen bases. He could reach Triple A by the end of the season.

Eddinson Paulino, IF

Old organization: Boston Red Sox
Assignment: Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats (injured list)

Paulino was placed on the seven-day injured list on July 13 so he will have to wait to make his Blue Jays debut. It is expected to be at the Double-A level, where he had a .263/.349/.391 line for Portland before the trade.

Detroit Tigers

Thayron Liranzo, C/1B

Old organization: Los Angeles Dodgers
Assignment: High-A West Michigan Whitecaps

A top-100 prospect coming into the season, Liranzo, 21, was one of the most high-profile minor leaguers moved. After hitting 24 homers in 94 Low-A Cal League games last season, he’d hit only seven in 74 High-A games this year. He remains in the Midwest League, where he’ll look to recapture that 2023 thunder.

Trey Sweeney, SS

Old organization: Los Angeles Dodgers
Assignment: Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens

The 2021 Yankees’ first-round pick is now on his third organization. He’s yet to reach his full potential at the plate and was batting only .254/.334/.427 in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League before the trade. He’ll try his luck in the International League now.

Eric Silva, RHP

Old organization: San Francisco Giants
Assignment: Double-A Erie SeaWolves

Silva was an over-slot fourth-round signing by the Giants in 2021. The 21-year-old flashed plus stuff in his first two full seasons but struggled with his command. He was moved to the bullpen this year, and he’s found success in a relief role, with a 4.35 ERA but a 51:18 K:BB in 41 1/3 innings. Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris was the Giants’ GM when Silva was drafted.

GO DEEPERDudline? Why MLB's trade deadline fell flat this season

Los Angeles Angels

George Klassen, RHP

Old organization: Philadelphia Phillies
Assignment: Low-A Inland Empire 66ers

Klassen lit the prospect world on fire earlier this season when he had an 0.71 ERA in nine Low-A starts to begin the year. He saw his ERA jump to 4.22 in four High-A starts before the trade. Interestingly, the Angels have sent him back to Low A, though they have used Inland Empire as a launching pad for some of their quick-moving prospects in the recent past. If the Angels see Klassen as a reliever and not a starter, he could race through their system.

Advertisem*nt

Samuel Aldegheri, LHP

Old organization: Philadelphia Phillies
Assignment: Double-A Rocket City Trash Pandas

Aldegheri, 22, posted a 3.18 ERA in 13 High-A starts before moving recently to Double A. He’ll stay in Double A with the Angels, joining a staff that includes two of their other top pitching prospects, Caden Dana and Sam Bachman.

Matthew Lugo, UT

Old organization: Boston Red Sox
Assignment: Triple-A Salt Lake Bees

Lugo posted a 1.069 OPS in 43 games in Double A to start the year, a big rebound after a disappointing stint at that level in 2023. He has not matched that production since a move to Triple A, though he’ll now get to play in much more hitter-friendly environments in the Pacific Coast League. He’ll also likely get to move back to the infield after being pushed into the outfield in a crowded Boston system.

GO DEEPERThe Angels didn't embrace a rebuild, or seemingly any plan for their future

Washington Nationals

Alex Clemmey, LHP

Old organization: Cleveland Guardians
Assignment: Low-A Fredericksburg Nationals

The Guardians have seemingly cornered the market on high school arms in the draft in recent years, and Clemmey, a 2023 second-round pick, was one of their highly regarded ones. He had a 4.67 ERA in 19 Low-A starts before the deal and will begin his Nationals career at that level as well. (In fact, he only had to switch dugouts after the deal, as Lynchburg was playing Fredericksburg at the time.)

Well this is awkward 😅

Glad to see Alex Clemmey and Rafael Ramirez Jr. as they start their journey with the Nats! @FXBGNats pic.twitter.com/YoMNljThBo

— Lynchburg Hillcats (@LynHillcats) July 30, 2024

Cayden Wallace, 3B

Old organization: Kansas City Royals
Assignment: Double-A Harrisburg Senators (injured list)

Wallace was part of the Nationals’ return for Hunter Harvey, a deal they made right before the draft that also netted them an extra pick. The 22-year-old has yet to debut for the Nationals as he continues to work his way back from an oblique injury he suffered in late May. He had a .777 OPS in 34 Double-A games before the injury.

Advertisem*nt

Rafael Ramirez Jr., SS

Old organization: Cleveland Guardians
Assignment: Low-A Fredericksburg Nationals

Ramirez also made the trek from one dugout to the other after the Lane Thomas trade. The 19-year-old son of the former big leaguer of the same name had a .620 OPS in 54 Low-A games before the deal.

Tyler Stuart, RHP

Old organization: New York Mets
Assignment: Double-A Harrisburg Senators

The 6-foot-9 Stuart had a 2.20 ERA in 110 2/3 innings last season, his first full season in pro ball. That included seven starts in Double A, the same level he’s pitched at for all of this season. He began his time with Washington in Harrisburg, but given his experience at Double A, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him jump to Triple A soon.

Chicago White Sox

Jeral Perez, IF

Old organization: Los Angeles Dodgers
Assignment: Low-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers

Perez, 19, hit 10 homers in 75 games in the California League before the deal, with an .800 OPS. He has a career .381 OBP.

Alexander Albertus, IF

Old organization: Los Angeles Dodgers
Assignment: Low-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (60-day IL)

Albertus landed on the injured list with a season-ending stress reaction in his left tibia just days before he was traded, so his Chicago debut will have to come next season.

William Bergolla, IF

Old organization: Philadelphia Phillies
Assignment: High-A Winston-Salem Dash

Bergolla, 19, hit his first professional home run earlier this season with High-A Jersey Shore. In 67 games for the Blue Claws, he had a .295/.350/.385 line with 18 steals. He’ll remain in High A for now.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Nick Yorke, UT

Old organization: Boston Red Sox
Assignment: Triple-A Indianapolis Indians

Like Lugo, Yorke was stuck in a depth chart jam in the middle infield in the Boston farm system, so a change of scenery deal to the Pirates will give him a new path to the big leagues. The 2020 first-round pick got off to a slow start this season in Double A but thrived after a promotion to Triple-A Worcester, where he hit .310/.408/.490 before the trade. He begins his Pirates tenure in Triple A but is likely to make his major-league debut with Pittsburgh at some point this season.

Advertisem*nt

Billy Cook, IF

Old organization: Baltimore Orioles
Assignment: Triple-A Indianapolis Indians

Similar to Yorke, Cook was stuck in a depth chart nightmare in Baltimore and gets a change of scenery with Pittsburgh. Cook had an .857 OPS in 70 games for Triple-A Norfolk after starting his season in Double A. He’ll man the Indianapolis infield with Yorke for now.

Oakland A’s

Mason Barnett, RHP

Old organization: Kansas City Royals
Assignment: Double-A Midland

A 2022 third-round pick, Barnett reached Double A last season and has spent all year at that level. In 91 2/3 innings, he had a 4.91 ERA and a 109:36 K:BB. Barnett remains in the Texas League with Double-A Midland but could move to Triple A by September.

After spinning a scoreless five-inning gem Sunday, #Royals No. 13 prospect Mason Barnett has a 1.93 ERA with 19 punchouts over his first three Double-A starts.@ANG_Recruiting #ServeYourWay pic.twitter.com/GLcFatveJu

— Northwest Arkansas Naturals (@nwanaturals) August 22, 2023

Kade Morris, RHP

Old organization: New York Mets
Assignment: High-A Lansing Lugnuts

A third-round pick out of Nevada-Reno last season, Morris began the year in Low A but made the jump to High A after a 3.63 ERA in 34 2/3 innings. He had a 3.43 ERA in 57 2/3 innings for High-A Brooklyn and will look to continue that success in the Midwest League with Lansing.

Philadelphia Phillies

Seth Johnson, RHP

Old organization: Baltimore Orioles
Assignment: Double-A Reading Phillies

After losing Klassen and Aldegheri in the Carlos Estévez trade with the Angels, the Phillies bolstered their minor-league starting pitching depth by adding Johnson, who was the No. 40 pick in the 2019 draft. He’s on his third organization now and had Tommy John surgery in 2022, but Johnson has been outstanding this season (2.63 ERA in 65 innings in Double A) and will be an arm to watch in the Phillies organization moving forward.

Advertisem*nt

Baltimore Orioles

Patrick Reilly, RHP

Old organization: Pittsburgh Pirates
Assignment: Double-A Bowie Baysox

Like the Phillies, the Orioles had a little depth chart repair to do with their starting pitching after dealing Johnson, so they acquired Reilly, a 22-year-old right-hander in the midst of an outstanding first full season of pro ball. The Vanderbilt alum had a 3.38 ERA in 88 innings in High A (with 108 strikeouts) at the time of the deal. He’s earned a promotion to Double A.

San Francisco Giants

Jacob Bresnahan, LHP

Old organization: Cleveland Guardians
Assignment: Low-A San Jose Giants

Like Clemmey, Bresnahan was a high school draft pick taken by Cleveland. A 13th-round pick, Bresnahan signed an over-slot deal last year. He was outstanding in 11 starts in the Arizona Complex League (2.54 ERA in 46 innings) before making his full-season debut in Low A just before the trade. He’ll continue to gain experience at the Low-A level with San Jose.
